Rudd, Portelli Earn Women's Soccer Weekly Accolades
LANCASTER, Pa. - The Atlantic East Conference announced the Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors on Monday afternoon, as Immaculata University's Riley Rudd earned Offensive Player of the Week and Cabrini University's Marissa Portelli grabbed Defensive Player of the Week.
Offensive Player of the Week:
Name: Riley Rudd
School: Immaculata University
Class: Junior
Position: Forward
Hometown: Yardley, Pa.
High School: Pennsbury
Brief Outlook of Week: Rudd had a strong offensive week as she played a role in each of the two goals scored by Immaculata this week. On Wednesday evening, Rudd provided the assist to freshman Kelli Dombroski for the game winner, which led Immaculata to a 1-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy. On Saturday afternoon, Rudd scored a goal of her own off a nice through-ball from Eleana Kriebel to lift Immaculata to a 1-0 victory over Neumann, lifting the Macs to 3-1-1 in league play entering the final week of the regular season.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Name: Marissa Portelli
School: Cabrini University
Class: Senior
Position: Defender
Hometown: Hatboro, Pa.
High School: Hatboro-Horsham
Brief Outlook of Week: Portelli capped her final two regular season home games in style as she helped the Cavaliers to shutout victories as a strong cog in an impressive backline for CU. She also recorded a goal in each of the Cavs' victories this week over Marywood and Gwynedd Mercy, respectively. Both of the veteran's tallies were of the game winning variety, as well. In total, Portelli needed just five shots to collect her second and third goals of the year to bring her point total to nine, despite her primary responsibility coming on the defensive side of the field for the Cavs.
Weekly Honor Roll:
Maria Hagan (Cabrini / Junior / Defender): Hagan was a consistent presence on the offensive side of the ball, despite her responsibility as a back for the Cavaliers. The junior tallied a pair of goals for the Blue and White, one in each victory over the Pacers and Griffins, respectively. Her 75th minute goal against Marywood sealed the key conference victory, while 56th minute strike against the Griffins put the game out of reach. Hagan was also selective with her shots as three of her five attempts landed on goal.
Emily Caldarelli (Wesley / Senior / Forward): Caldarelli scored two of the three goals against Marymount on Wednesday for another league victory.
Karen Reyes (Marymount / Senior / Forward): Reyes helped the Saints go 1-1 on the week, including a 7-0 victory over Trinity (D.C.) on Senior Day. She registered a hat trick in the game, marking her first of the season and the second of her career. Reyes led the Saints in the game and on the week with the three goals and six points.
Brooke Shissler (Immaculata / Sophomore / Goalkeeper): Shissler took part in a pair of shutout victories over Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday and over Neumann on Saturday. On Wednesday evening vs Gwynedd Mercy, Shissler played the first 82 minutes of regulation making a pair of nice saves to keep Gwynedd off the scoreboard in a winning effort. On Saturday afternoon, Shissler made eight crucial saves to shutdown the Neumann offense and earn the shutout victory, which improved IU to 3-1-1 in league play entering the final week of the regular season. Shissler has now surrendered just two goals in Atlantic East play while playing 439 minutes of scoreless soccer throughout Atlantic East play.
