Atlantic East Commissioner's Awards and Mike Drass Trophy

Philosophy
The philosophy of the Atlantic East Conference and Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association encourages broad-based athletic programs, gives equal emphasis on all sports and especially recognizes the impact of athletic participation on the student-athlete.

Point System
The Atlantic East Commissioner’s Awards point system is determined by the 20 different conference sports in the fall, winter and spring. The conference office and institutional Athletic Directors agreed to implement this system for calculating the Commissioner’s Awards, beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.

A Men’s Commissioner’s Award, a Women’s Commissioner’s Award, and the Mike Drass Trophy are given to the institutional that won total points. All three awards are traveling awards.

The base point system adjusts to equal total number of full member institutions. Currently, the seven-member conference uses a seven-point base in each sport that conducts a regular season and a championship tournament. Points are awarded based on the number of teams sponsoring the sport:

7 teams: 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (M&W Soccer, W Volleyball, M&W Basketball, M&W Lacrosse, Baseball, Softball)
6 teams: 7-6-5-4-3-1 (Field Hockey, M&W Tennis)

Tiebreaker determined by tournament seeding tiebreaker specified in each sport’s respective sport codes.

Teams gain an additional one point for each Atlantic East playoff win for a maximum of 10 points in any sport (except baseball and softball, where final tournament finish determines playoff points awarded). Teams with byes receive a point for making the semifinal contest. An additional point is given to the semifinal and championship winners.

In baseball and softball, where teams can play more than three (3) games in a double-elimination tournament format, the final four teams in the tournament receive playoff points on a 3 (champion) – 2 (runner-up) – 1 (runner-up in first-round pods) basis.

In sports determined only by the championship competition, a 10-point system will be used. Points are awarded based on the number of teams sponsoring the sport. “Playoff points” are factored in, based on tournament standings, to give equal value to potential points earned in sports with regular season and post-season competitions:

7 teams: 10-8-6-5-3-2-1 (M&W Cross Country, WSwimmimg)
6 teams: 10-8-6-5-3-1 (MSwimming)
5 teams: 10-8-6-5-1 (M&W Outdoor Track & Field)
