Marywood's Ayers and Gwynedd Mercy's Glovas Awarded Baseball Weekly Award Honors

HADDONFIELD, N.J. - The Atlantic East Conference announced the Baseball weekly award winners on Monday, with Marywood’s Joel Ayers being named Player of the Week and Gwynedd Mercy’s Landon Glovas being named Pitcher of the Week.

Player of the Week: Joel Ayers
School: Marywood
Class: Sophomore
Position: Catcher
Hometown: Severn, Md.
High School: DeMatha Catholic
Brief Outlook of Week: Ayers opened the season with a .588 batting average in five games, leading the Pacers to a 3-2 record. He scored nine runs, drove in seven RBIs, and stole four bases in as many attempts. Ayers had an on-base percentage of .696. In a loss to Scranton, Ayers went 3 for 4 with a double. In a doubleheader sweep over Notre Dame (Md.), he was 5 for 8 with six runs and six RBIs. Defensively, he had three assists from the catching position. 

Pitcher of the Week: Landon Glovas
School: Gwynedd Mercy
Class: Freshman
Position: Pitcher
Hometown: Nazareth, Pa.
High School: Nazareth Area
Brief Outlook of Week: Glovas (1-0) impressed in his collegiate debut as the Gwynedd Mercy freshman enjoyed the benefit of the Red and Gold offense in a 12-0, seven-inning victory over Penn State Hazleton. Glovas kept the Nittany Lions uncomfortable at the plate, allowing only three walks while striking out three to work around two outfield errors in a high-sky day at Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball Field.
 

Weekly Honor Roll:
Dom Chiego, Centenary:
Chiego went 4-for-9, with four doubles, while collecting his 100th career hit. He also collected four RBIs and scored three runs, batting .444%.

Drew Haines, Gwynedd Mercy: Haines flashed the leather on more than one occasion while also contributing plenty at the plate in a 2-1 weekend versus Penn State Hazleton and Penn State Abington. He was 4-for-8 with four walks, four runs, three RBI’s, and a stolen base over the three-day weekend round robin. Haines recorded at least a hit in each contest and had his best performance in the Friday opener; 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run-batted-in (RBI). He drove in the run with a fifth-inning double to left center. 

Chase Allen, Marymount: Allen tossed 4.0 crucial innings out of the bullpen for the Saints in their win over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. Striking out five, the first-year allowed just one earned run on two hits against the Tigers. He posted a 1.75 ERA on the day.

Joshmar Carbonell, Marymount: The sophomore shortstop helped lead the Saints to a trio of wins over the weekend to improve Marymount's record to 5-2. Batting at a .455 clip with a double, slugging .545, Carbonell drove in six total RBI. In game two of the double header with Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, he secured the win in walk off fashion, knocking a single in the bottom of the 10th inning to drive in the winning run.

Danny Tiedemann, Marywood: Tiedemann threw five scoreless innings over two games to open the season. He allowed just three hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts. Tiedemann kept opposing hitters to a .188 batting average. He opened the week with a scoreless inning of relief against Scranton. Tiedemann limited Rosemont to three hits in four innings to earn the win.
