Marymount Softball Wins their First Atlantic East Championship

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Marymount softball made history on Saturday afternoon, coming all the way back to win two against Immaculata and claim their first-ever Atlantic East Championship.

In just their fourth season as a program, the Saints will continue their season in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

NOTABLE MARYMOUNT 3 - IMMACULATA 1
  • After a pair of scoreless innings from the two starters in the circle, Immaculata scored a lone run in the bottom of the third to take a slim lead.
  • Kaylynn Johnson opened the top of the fourth with a walk, advaning all the way to third via an error. With one away, Jenna Jew came through, shooting a single to score Johnson and even up the scoreboard.
  • With Demusz dealing, the Saints gave her the runs she needed in the top of the sixth. Johnson singled to open the frame, and after advancing to second, scored on a triple off the bat of Kaylee AtkinsHailey Leamer drove in Atkins with an RBI single to give Marymount a 3-1 cushion.
  • Demusz worked around traffic in the bottom of the sixth and sat the Mighty Macs down in order in the seventh to claim the win and force the winner-take-all contest.
  • Demusz had her best start of the year when it mattered most, tossing the complete game allowing just one run while striking out 13.
  • The Saints' 3-7 hitters in the lineup each collected a hit.
  • Leila Hernandez notched a single, with Harley Maire taking advantage of her pinch-hit opportunity with a hit.
MARYMOUNT 8 - IMMACULATA 0
  • The Saints scored first in game two of the day to start the story, with Johnson driving an RBI double to score Kammie Brown who walked to lead off the frame.
  • Marymount plated five runs in the bottom of the third to take a commanding lead, highlighted by a two RBI double off the bat of Ashleigh Mannion. Jew, Hernandez, and Leamer each had an RBI in the frame.
  • The Saints walked it off in the bottom of the fifth, with Brown knocking in the seventh run before Samantha Cinotti clinched the Championship with an RBI to send Marymount into celebration.
  • Starter in the circle Emma McCormack continued her hot stretch in the Tournament with a complete game shutout, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings with three punchouts.
  • Johnson, Leamer, Mannion, and Hernandez each knocked a pair of hits.
  • Jew, Greer, and Cinotti each added a hit for the Saints.
