Lancaster, Pa. - The Atlantic East Conference announced the Sportsmanship Team of the Year award on Thursday morning, an award voted on by the athletic directors of the seven league institutions, naming Marywood University's Softball team the winner.
The Sportsmanship Team of the Year award is given to a team that positively affected the game environment and exhibited acts and/or behaviors based on values, respect and integrity.
Marywood Softball finished third and the regular season landing in the best of three series for the conference championship. Due to the field being unplayable they did not complete the championship series. The Marywood softball players exhibited class and integrity despite the disappointment of the season's end.
For the second straight year the Pacers came out of Pod B to play in the final series. Marywood defeated second seeded Marymount after the weather adjusted Pod B tournament.
Throughout the year the team participated in a variety of community service projects. These projects included Beacon Specialized Living's Trunk or Treat, Santa Drive and Marywood's Giving Tree Project. A group of Pacers also attended the Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge on Montage Mountain in Scranton.
Marywood was led by four all conference members Kat Davis, Emma McNally, Priscilla Grill, and Marissa Gregory. Davis and McNally each earned Rookie of the year and Elite 20 Winner respectively. At large selections Abbey Stalter and Tori Para landed on the Atlantic East Second Team.
Each year we recognize a team for their work off the playing field with this award. Marywood encompasses the sportsmanship and off field work that the conference strives for.
