St. Mary's and Marymount Earn Major Men's Swimming Awards, All Conference Announced

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Atlantic East Conference announced the 2024 Men's Swimming Major Award Winners and All-Conference teams on Tuesday as, St. Mary's College of Maryland and Marymount University earned major awards.

Luke Schwenk repeats as Swimmer of the Year after a record setting weekend in the pool. Schwenk claimed gold in three events including two NCAA B-cut times. In the 50 freestyle Schwenk went a NCAA DIII best time for this season with a time of 19.86. He then took gold in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.80. To close the meet Schwenk touched in at 44.26 in the 100 freestyle to receive an NCAA B-cut. He currently sits first in the 50-yard freestyle and – in the 100-yard freestyle across the NCAA DIII standings. The three swims each broke his own conference records. Schwenk joined teammates in the 200-yard (1:33.87) and 400-yard medley relay (3:28.14) to take gold medal honors in conference record times. The junior also took home silver medal honors in the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Rookie of the Year honors went to Garrett Watson who had a breakout meet for the conference champion Marymount squad. Watson took gold medal honors in the 400-yard individual medley and the 1650-yard freestyle. His time of 16:44.63 in the 1650—yard freestyle set a conference and meet record. Watson also picked up a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.07). The first year also joined teammates on the gold medal 800-yard freestyle relay.

St. Mary’s was awarded Coaching Staff of the Year, as voted on by the coaches of the conference. St. Mary’s is led by Casey Brandt and assisted by Christian March, Carolyn Sutton, and Zach Shattuck.

Finally, the Atlantic East Elite 20 award winner for men's swimming, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the Atlantic East's 20 team championships, is Robert Shively from St. Mary’s. Shively maintains a 3.97 while majoring in mathematics. The sophomore and 2023 Rookie of the Year also took home two gold medals in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly.
