St. Mary's and Marymount Earn Major Men's Swimming Awards

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Atlantic East Conference announced the 2023 Men's Swimming Major Award Winners and All-Conference teams on Tuesday as, St. Mary's College of Maryland and Marymount University earned major awards.

Luke Schwenk the reigning Rookie of the year was named the 2023 Swimmer of the Year. Schwenk claimed gold in three events including two NCAA B-cut times. In the 50 freestyle Schwenk went a conference best time of 20.35 to start the meet. He then took gold in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.54. To close the meet Schwenk touched in at 44.44 in the 100 freestyle to receive an NCAA B-cut and under the invite time from season ago. All three of his swims were meet records as the 50 and 100 freestyle were also conference records. Schwenk joined teammates in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay that took home silver medal honors. He was also a part of the gold medal winning 400 medley relay.

St. Mary’s Robert Shively earned Rookie of the year honors after two conference titles in the 500 freestyle (4:43.61) and the 200 butterfly (1:52.27) both times were conference and meet records. In his third individual event Shively finished second in the 400 individual medley. The first year was also a part of three St. Mary’s relays. The 400 medley relay took gold, the 200 medley relay took silver, while the 800 freestyle relay took home a bronze medal.

Marymount was awarded Coaching Staff of the Year, as voted on by the coaches of the conference, after winning their first Atlantic East swimming titles.

Finally, the Atlantic East Elite 20 award winner for men's swimming, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the Atlantic East's 20 team championships, is Trevor Cairns from Marymount University. Cairns, a member of runner-up Marymount, maintains a cumulative 3.923 GPA.
