Marymount Wins Inaugural Women's Flag Football Championship

LANCASTER, Pa. – Marymount University wins the inaugural Atlantic East Conference Women’s Flag Football Championship.

The historic championship had support from the Philadelphia Eagles Drumline, cheerleaders and mascot Swoop to welcome the teams to action. Today the league recognized the coaches and student athletes as they came together for the first NCAA level women’s flag football events.

The Marymount Saints defeated Centenary in the in the semifinal to start their Atlantic East Flag Football championship run. Marymount then faced Immaculata in the league championship. The matchup saw early and often scoring from Marymount as they put nine touchdowns on the board and two extra appoints for 52 points. The defense held Immaculata throughout the game with three interceptions and allowing no points in the contest.  

Throughout the semifinal and championship Marymount had touchdowns from Samantha Bulik (5), Cara Vollmer (4), Ella Morrison (3), Avery DeFazio (2), Cara Craig (1), and Emily Knabel (1). Samantha Bulik earned MVP of the tournament after her touchdown tallies, six flag pulls, and three interceptions.

The first semifinal featured Immaculata against Neumann. The Mighty Macs scored the first flag football touchdown of Atlantic East action and held that lead through halftime. Neumann tied the game up with a touchdown by Giovanna Santorello. Immaculata took the win with a second touchdown and the 13-7 victory. The Mighty Macs had touchdowns from both Natalie Dodd and Meg Robins.

The consolation game featured Neumann and the Centenary Cyclones. Neumann earned the victory with four scores from Giovanna Santorello. Centenary was led defensively in both games by Sedem Atadja who finished the tournament with five flag pulls for the Cyclones. Through the tournament Neumann defense tallied five interceptions and top flag pull numbers by Olivia Putting with nine across the two games.

Also recognized during the award ceremony was the Atlantic East Elite 20 award winner. This is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the Atlantic East's 20 team championships. This season the award went to Marymount’s Avery Defazio who maintains a 4.0 GPA. For the entire selection criteria and process, click here.
