Wesley College Field Hockey Deemed Conference's Sportsmanship Team of the Year

Lancaster, Pa. - The Atlantic East Conference announced the Sportsmanship Team of the Year award on Tuesday morning, an award voted on by the athletic directors of the seven league institutions, naming Wesley College field hockey the winner.

The Sportsmanship Team of the Year award is given to a team that positively affected the game environment and exhibited acts and/or behaviors based on values, respect and integrity.

During the month of October, the field hockey team hosted and participated in a national breast cancer awareness campaign. This event hit national news when media outlets across the country covered a Wesley College student-athlete’s story about her fight with breast cancer. The team spread awareness regarding self-exams and the importance of following through with appointments.

The team’s campaign reached 44 field hockey programs from 10 different conferences along with numerous supporting individuals pledged to walk, jog or run 100 miles in honor of breast cancer awareness and Wesley field hockey teammate, Alexis Howerin. Although the challenge started within Atlantic East Conference field hockey programs to raise awareness and show support for Alexis, the campaign spread throughout the Division III community. Of the 20 programs to report miles, a total of 45,645 miles were recorded in 31 days.

The conferences who participated included the Atlantic East Conference, the Colonial States Athletic Conference, the Commonwealth Coast Conference, the Landmark Conference and the North Coast Athletic Conference. Additionally, individual programs pledged to raise awareness from the Middle Atlantic Conference, the New Jersey Athletic Conference, the Southern Athletic Association, the Centennial Conference and from Division I, the Patriot League.
