Men's Soccer All-Conference Honors Announced With Wesley Snagging Two Major Awards
LANCASTER, Pa. - The Atlantic East Conference announced the first-ever Men's Soccer All-Conference honors on Friday, the last of the Fall conference postseason awards, and Wesley College earned two of the major awards while Immaculata University and Neumann University grabbed one each.
Heading the major awards was the 2018 Player of the Year from Wesley,
Chimaobi Ikwuagwu, who ranks 30th in the country and atop of the league in goals with 14 this season. That is six more than the next highest contender in the Atlantic East. He also has 31 points this season with the addition of three assists. The senior forward has played in 18 games so far this season, and has scored in nine of them.
Ikwuagwu is joined in the major awards category with teammate
Matthew Dina as Defensive Player of the Year. A junior defender for the Wolverines, he has started in all 19 games for Wesley this season after missing most of last season due to an injury. He was a key cog in the success of a Wesley backline that averaged the least amount of goals against in the league this season at 1.11 goals per game. The squad also sat atop the league in shutouts with seven this season.
The Rookie of the Year honor went to a First-Team honoree in Neumann's
Gavin Ford. Ford finished the season ranked fifth in the Atlantic East in total points with 17 off six goals and five assists. He was the second-leading scorer for a Knights team that won the regular season and went on to win the tournament title. With a pair of assists in the title game against Cabrini University, he was named the tournament's most valuable player.
The Coach of the Year honor, voted on by the coaches in the league, went to Immaculata's
Jamie Scott, after earning a spot in the Atlantic East tournament and advancing to the semifinals. In a lot of tight games throughout the season, his squad toughed out six one-goal victories for the first-year Head Coach. Taking over the program this season, he added three more victories to the Mighty Macs' win column, while winning their first playoff game since the 2009 season.
